Relationships in the opening

A Familiar Face Deepens Olive's Isolation

Olive recognizes Cynthia, but familiarity brings no comfort because their shared history is already hostile. She tries to explain Cynthia's place in the household by wondering whether a mate bond released her from the cult, then fears that such a connection would make mercy impossible. Those thoughts are Olive's speculation, not established facts, and they reveal how strongly she associates belonging with protection that remains unavailable to her.

Which assumptions about Cynthia's relationships come from evidence, and which arise from Olive's fear and longing for safety?
