Lilith's Tears Answer the Care Ella Has Missed
Ella expects little comfort from Alexander after years of unanswered attempts to connect. Outside the hospital, Lilith's tears and concern offer an immediate contrast, showing a relationship in which her distress matters to someone else. Ella still tries to speak evenly for fear of gossip, so this friendship becomes the place where practical news and concealed grief briefly meet; it does not remove her lingering wish that her husband might choose closeness.
How does Lilith's response expose the difference between Ella's public composure and her need for personal care?
