Relationships in the opening

Years of Familiarity Fail to Secure Present Trust

Ardal remembers Kadeem through overlapping bonds of childhood friendship, marriage, and mate recognition. She uses that shared history as evidence that they should still fit together, yet the confidence it gives her is vulnerable to a sudden change in his expression. The familiar history gives Ardal a powerful basis for hope, while Kadeem's abrupt withdrawal shows how sharply her experience of the present can diverge from the security she associates with their years together.

Which parts of Ardal's confidence come from shared history rather than Kadeem's present commitment?
