Relationships in the opening
The Family's Carefully Chosen Gift Carries Morgan Away
The motorcycle Morgan uses to leave was a birthday gift shaped by detailed family attention, from her favorite colors to her mother's concern for protective equipment. Her recollection of thanking them makes the present farewell more complicated than a history of uninterrupted hostility. The remembered care gives the motorcycle a double significance in these opening paragraphs: it is evidence of how well her family once knew her and the practical means by which she now leaves them.
How do the remembered details of the motorcycle gift complicate Morgan's belief that nobody will miss her now?
