Relationships in the opening

Noah's Bet Leaves Lila Holding One Reliable Bond

Noah's accidental use of Elena's name leads to the admission that his relationship with Lila began as a bet. Lila ends it, but her mother's needs keep her tied to the household where the humiliation continues. Her description of maternal love supplies a distinct emotional anchor in these opening paragraphs, making the person she hopes to protect central to her choices after the relationship with Noah has broken down.

Which relationship gives Lila a reason to keep negotiating after trust in Noah has collapsed?
