Lucien's Old Promise Meets His Present Allegiance

Lucien enters Aysel's room with the people she fears, prompting memories of a friendship in which she could once speak openly and know his private preferences. His earlier promise of lasting loyalty contrasts with a later insistence that she address him by rank beside Skylar. The flowers in the remembered scene matter because they come from genuine knowledge of him, exposing the distance between former intimacy and his public treatment of her.

Why does Aysel's knowledge of Lucien's liking for flowers make his public distance especially significant?
