Relationships in the opening

Marcus's Early Care Shadows the Office Discovery

Marcus first meets Ember in acute grief and offers company, shelter, and the possibility of belonging to his small pack. His later presence through nightmares gives her reasons to understand the bond as love. The time jump makes the kiss with Seraphina hurt against a specific record of care, asking readers to hold the remembered refuge and the present breach of trust together as Ember enters the office.

Which remembered acts of care make Ember's present discovery more than a simple surprise?
