A Mother's Promise Fails to Protect Edward

Xavier remembers his mother's warning about anger but dismisses her understanding of the burden he carries. Her other legacy, his promise to keep Edward safe, proves similarly weak when his brother speaks critically and Xavier injures him. Family connection therefore operates as a thin restraint on violence rather than dependable protection, and Edward must deliver unwelcome information inside a relationship where truthful speech has an immediate physical cost.

What happens to Xavier's promise of protection when Edward tells him something he does not want to hear?
