Relationships in the opening

A Celebrated Bond Meets an Empty Homecoming

Cindy expected to welcome James after a year away at war, carrying the public image of a bond others had admired. Instead, she witnesses his betrayal and returns alone to their residence. When he later appears clean and composed, the contrast makes familiar appearances unreliable; his final description of her sacrifices as duty withholds the acknowledgment she seeks from the person whose family she helped care for.

Which ordinary signs of homecoming become harder for Cindy to trust after what she has witnessed?
