Relationships in the opening

Orion Joins the Voices Aria Hoped to Escape

Aria hopes that Orion might see her differently from the family and pack members who belittle her. His participation in the mockery therefore wounds a possibility of acceptance, not an established supportive relationship. Memories of her brother's death further trouble her sense that she deserves happiness; in these opening paragraphs, self-accusation and a later claim of undeserved guilt make her longing for acceptance internally conflicted.

How does hoping for Orion's recognition change the effect of his public mockery?
