Relationships in the opening

A Ride Home Without Easy Reassurance

With her phone in her hand, Cynthia realizes she has nobody to call while Rosalie chases her. The arrival of Zeon, a friend of her father's, introduces practical assistance rather than a demonstrated emotional bond: he notices her distress and offers a ride. Cynthia accepts the ride while worrying about being seen arriving with him, so the relief of leaving school and the anxiety of approaching home coexist within the same brief act of assistance.

What separates Zeon's observable help from the reassurance Cynthia still cannot feel?
