Relationships in the opening

Iris Expects Two Pieces of Good News to Meet

Iris delays her announcement out of consideration for Arthur's important meeting, imagining an evening in which they can celebrate both futures together. His warm return initially supports that expectation, but his expression changes when he reads the report. These opening paragraphs place her confident anticipation beside the immediate change in his expression, inviting readers to attend closely to how their different reactions interrupt the celebration she imagined.

What has Iris assumed about Arthur's response, and what does his changed expression actually establish at this point?
