Relationships in the opening

Darius Provides the Attention Edeline Directs Elsewhere

Darius helps Edeline choose a dress, teases her out of watching the window, and accompanies her downstairs while her attention stays fixed on his brother. Their familiar exchanges show an existing friendship through small acts of involvement rather than promised destiny. Set beside her hopes for Percival, this gives readers a grounded comparison between support already demonstrated and expectations focused on someone whose arrival she has spent these opening paragraphs eagerly anticipating.

What does Darius do for Edeline in the present that differs from what she hopes Percival's arrival will mean?
