Relationships in the opening

A Shared Promise Collapses Beside the Lake

The lake platform holds memories of Becca and Elyon's earlier commitment, making it a pointed setting for his withdrawal from their agreement. Becca asks him to honor their promise about future mates, while he insists his attachment to her can continue without the position or exclusivity she expected. The emotional question is whether shared history means the same thing to both people when one uses it to justify retaining a relationship on altered terms.

How do Becca and Elyon use memories of their relationship to argue for incompatible versions of its future?
