Sophia's Confidence Meets an Unexplained Closed Door

Sophia speaks about Bruce with complete confidence and interprets his absence from university as responsible help for his family. Her wish to surprise him grows directly out of that trust, especially with her best friend also unavailable. In these opening paragraphs, an unexpected sound outside his bedroom unsettles the assumptions that brought her there, shifting her from confident anticipation toward an immediate need to understand what she encounters.

Which expectations about Bruce make Sophia's unannounced visit feel welcome to her before she reaches his door?
