Relationships in the opening

Serena Returns to the Remains of Home

After enduring Derek's cruelty, Serena goes to the damaged house that once belonged to her parents. Its condition contrasts with the attachment she still feels, offering a place for memory rather than a present source of protection. Her account of being brought into Derek's pack after losing her own community further complicates the idea of rescue: admission to a household has not provided the care or belonging she needed.

What does the ruined family home still offer Serena that Derek's functioning household does not?
