Elara regards Ethan as less harsh than the men who control her daily life, but that comparison offers only fragile reassurance. His apparent pleasure at the dinner arrangement does not establish that he recognizes her lack of choice, and she anticipates a change in his manner. Against memories of punishment for resistance, the opening makes trust a question of observable protection rather than politeness measured against more openly abusive behavior.
