Relationships in the opening

A Familiar Voice Fails to Bring Rescue

During transport, Faye clings to the hope of reaching the man she associates with safety. His scent and familiar voice seem to confirm that rescue is close, yet his response to the prisoners intensifies her danger instead. The emotional focus is the repeated renewal and collapse of expectation: recognition matters deeply to her, but the opening gives no reciprocal act of recognition on which she can actually rely.

Which cues make Faye expect help, and what observable response does each expectation receive?
