Relationships in the opening

Mate Recognition Offers Louisa No Reassurance

Louisa recognizes Lucas as her mate, but his expression turns a supposedly affirming encounter into something frightening. A different relationship then becomes visible when Lucian answers Lucas candidly and replaces his wine with water. These opening paragraphs offer two forms of connection to compare, one announced through instinct and the other demonstrated through an ordinary act of practical intervention between the men.

What evidence of care is actually shown, as opposed to implied by a mate bond or an official role?
