Relationships in the opening

A Promise of Priority Meets Kael's Silence

Lilac appeals to a history in which Kael promised she would always come first, but his silence and closeness to Coco contradict that assurance. Her parents' final looks carry the care she no longer finds in her husband, even as they cannot protect her. The opening is about the destruction of an existing support structure, not merely the appearance of a rival. Kael's later shielding of Coco makes his present allegiance unmistakable.

How does the scene distinguish remembered promises from the loyalties expressed through present actions?
