Relationships in the opening

Nicole's Certainty Misses Ava's Distress

Nicole notices Ava's unusual distraction and quickly understands that she has recognized a mate. Yet Nicole's happiness rests on the belief that Ava can now reject him and proceed with her engagement, not on asking what Ava feels. When Ava tries to leave with her, concern turns toward irritation. The opening shows friends sharing knowledge of a plan while failing, in this moment, to share an understanding of the experience.

How does Nicole's interpretation of the encounter differ from Ava's immediate emotional reality?
