Relationships in the opening

An Aunt's Sale Leaves No Household Ally

Carla has no remembered relationship with her parents and describes her aunt as the person who sold her into service. Inside the mansion, the mistress's violence is reinforced by her sons' laughter rather than interrupted by anyone offering help. Carla relies on equipment she bought herself to treat the resulting injuries. These opening memories and acts of self-care show how the responses of relatives and employers leave Carla carrying the immediate burden of treating her injuries.

Who could have offered Carla protection in this history, and what do they do instead?
