Lucien's Old Promise Meets His New Allegiance

Seeing Lucien arrive with Skylar brings Aysel back to a friendship once close enough for promises of lasting loyalty. In a later remembered exchange, he insists on his Beta title and treats her request to talk as an inconvenience. The contrast lies between private familiarity and public distancing. Aysel knows a tender preference he hides from others, making the contrast between their shared history and his public use of rank particularly concrete in these opening memories.

What private knowledge does Aysel bring to an interaction Lucien insists on making hierarchical?
