Relationships in the opening

Complicity Replaces Care Between Two Alphas

Talon responds to Roger's violence as an ally of the perpetrator, offering a visit rather than concern for the people harmed. His recollection of a Beta leaving with his partner provides a contrasting act of protection, placing his decision to leave beside Talon's decision to continue the alliance. Reading only for trust and support, the opening distinguishes solidarity that enables abuse from solidarity that removes someone from danger. The two men's friendship functions here as mutual permission for harm rather than care.

Whom does each act of loyalty protect, and whom does it leave exposed?
