Relationships in the opening

Rosella Receives the Tenderness Emilia Is Denied

Emilia asks why her family hates her and receives mockery instead of an answer. Her father's expression changes when Rosella takes his hand, making unequal affection visible in the same conversation. Their shared laughter deepens Emilia's sense that she is excluded from the family they claim to defend. These opening paragraphs place the tenderness directed toward Rosella beside the contempt directed toward Emilia, making their unequal treatment visible within a single family exchange.

Which small changes in the family's behavior make their favoritism most visible?
