Relationships in the opening

A Morning Greeting Receives No Warmth

Violet recalls trusting Leo because he helped her family, and she still looks for reassurance in the smallest morning exchange. His lack of acknowledgment disappoints her, but she responds by wondering what is wrong with herself rather than questioning the treatment. Her interpretation of a slight facial movement deepens that self-doubt, making the distinction between observed behavior and her own explanation important when reading this domestic scene.

When Leo is distant, what does Violet observe directly and what does she assume about herself?
