Relationships in the opening

Remembered Protection Sustains Amber's Hope

Amber brings pregnancy news because she believes it can improve a strained relationship. Her memory of Julian defending her at medical school gives her a reason to keep seeking him even after the humiliating reception. When he finally appears, his indifference conflicts with the protector she remembers. The opening is particularly concerned with how earlier kindness can sustain trust beyond the point when present behavior begins to undermine it.

Which memories encourage Amber to persist, and which current actions challenge those memories?
