Relationships in the opening

A Mother's Return Cannot Replace Her Father

Olivia holds her father's ashes and finds comfort in his familiar chair when Nicole returns after thirteen years. Instead of acknowledging that grief, Nicole criticizes her appearance and the home. Olivia refuses a nickname reserved for loved ones, marking a boundary between biological connection and earned intimacy. The scene makes the reunion painful because presence alone does not repair the long absence or supply the care Olivia has just lost.

Which details distinguish the closeness Olivia shared with her father from Nicole's claim to motherhood?
