Relationships in the opening

Laughter Does Not Always Mean Support

Donovan and Gibson laugh when Zalia refuses Layla's demand, while Alpha Brad intervenes when the confrontation becomes threatening. Those responses do not amount to identical forms of support. Zalia also notices Donovan's failure to correct outsiders' assumptions about her role, which complicates her otherwise positive account of home. The opening invites attention to the difference between enjoying someone's defiance and publicly recognizing their standing.

Who supports Zalia through action, and who leaves important misunderstandings uncorrected?
